Pianos sold at ‘rock bottom prices’ as music school closes a Johnson County location
After 21 years at the Kansas City School of Music, Scott Smith is shutting down his original Lenexa location.
For the next few weeks, he’ll be selling off his pianos at “rock bottom prices,” he said — as low as $800.
Brands include Kawai, Knabe, Seiler, and Mason & Hamlin.
“Pretty much we’re selling them at wholesale price, what we got them for, which is kind of unheard of for the piano business,” Smith said. “We just need to get everything out of the building so we can close it.”
The space at 12201 W. 87th St. Parkway is locked up, but interested parties can reach him at 913-972-5240 to make an appointment.
Smith has about 20 pianos he’s trying to get rid of, as well as a few Yamaha guitars that he’s selling for $90 to $130.
But the Kansas City School of Music isn’t going away. Smith will be continuing business at his Overland Park location, 16010 Metcalf Ave., which he opened 10 years ago.
Smith said business at the second location grew while the Lenexa location shrank. He’s decided to close the old spot to focus on his bigger location.
In addition to selling guitars and pianos, the Kansas City School of Music offers instrumental, vocal, and music theory classes.
His programs are available for all ages, but a good portion of his students are school-age.
“The piano sales are kind of a side thing to help the school,” Smith said. “That’s what we’re really passionate about, is how to help kids learn and play music.”
Smith said his classes are for students who are “really serious” about learning their craft.
“We’re here for people who really want a top-level instructor,” he said.
