New Mexican food vendor to begin serving tacos, tamales at Johnson County market
Mexican food vendor Chilakillers will join the Lenexa Public Market as an anchor tenant this spring.
Chilakillers will sell tacos, tamales, arroz con leche and other Mexican items at the 8750 Penrose Lane food hall at Lenexa City Center. Other merchants there include Mr. D’s Coffee, the recently opened Cardboard Corner Cafe and Cosmo Burger.
Chef Fernando Borrego started Chilakillers as a food truck in 2022, according to a release from the city. He brought his arroz con leche and chilaquiles around the metro, including the Lenexa Public Market’s Friday Night Sound Bites music series.
“After building a strong following with our food truck, we believe now is the perfect time to bring our authentic Mexican cuisine to a permanent place here at Lenexa Public Market,” Borrego said in a statement.
The city did not detail Chilakillers’ opening date but estimated it would begin serving customers in late spring.
Tamale vendor Red Kitchen KC closed its spot in the public market a few months ago to open a sit-down restaurant in downtown Overland Park.
Red Kitchen KC’s new restaurant is called Red Kitchen: Cien Por Ciento Mexicana and is now open at 7926 Santa Fe Drive.
