Johnson County grocery store, restaurant outgrow space. Here’s where they’re moving

KC India Mart is building a new, bigger space less than 2 miles from its current spot.

The grocery store will move from 8542 W. 133rd St. to 8201 W. 135th St., off Hemlock Street. It will bring along the adjacent Desi Bites Indian cafe for the 13,000-plus-square-foot building, according to development plans recently approved by the city.

KC India Mart will take up most of the stone, flat roof building, plans indicate.

The store sells Indian products, produce and household goods.

It will become the only Indian grocer with its own building in Johnson County. (The free-standing Pan-Asia Market sells products from India, Cambodia, China and more.)

Other Indian grocers in Overland Park include Royal Spices at 8380 W. 151st St. and Ambica Foods at 9054 Metcalf Ave.

KC India Mart’s owner could not be reached to comment on the timeline of the project.
