Banksia is moving up in the world.

The Australian cafe and bakery plans to soon move out of its current downtown location, at 105 W. Ninth. St., into a much larger space at Town Pavilion, just a few blocks away at 1111 Main St.

“After six successful years at our current downtown location, we were looking to expand into a space … where we could accommodate a large bar and dinner service,” Banksia founder Robert Joseph said in a release.

The Town Pavilion space, which is 5,300 square feet, was formerly home to Plowboys Barbecue, which closed in 2022. Joseph added that they plan to build a “beautiful, plant-filled outdoor patio” as well.

A late spring opening is planned for the new location. The 2,000-square-foot Ninth Street location will remain open until then. Banksia’s other cafe, at 4800 Main St., Suite 103, on the South Plaza, is also still open.

Banksia debuted downtown in 2018. Founded by Sydney transplants Rob and Kate Joseph and Erika Vikor, the restaurant serves dishes common in Australia but rarely found in the U.S. Popular items include meat pies like a pork and fennel sausage roll and pastries like the almond frangipane croissant.
