Bijou, a European-style bistro at 301 Westport Road, has closed — for now.

“Bijou will be closed temporarily while details are worked through regarding new ownership and lease agreements,” the restaurant announced recently on social media.

The restaurant is owned by Jeffrey Schmitz and Gene Switzer, who also own Bistro 303 next door. They had dubbed the space The Peacock when they first opened it in 2021. In June, Chad Alexander took over management and changed the concept and branding to Bijou.

The menu featured a wide range of small plates, from miso mushrooms to grilled jerk pork, as well as an extensive selection of cocktails.

Alexander told The Star that his contract with the owners expired Dec. 31, but that another local restaurant was in talks to take over the space.

“The plans are to keep the name Bijou, keep the interior, and reopen soon, just under new owners and management,” Alexander said, but he was not sure when.

Bistro 303’s owners did not respond to a request for comment.
