Outdoor retailer closing all of its Kansas City area stores, including one on the Plaza
Outdoor sports gear company Moosejaw will close most of its stores across the country, including its only Kansas City area spots — on the Country Club Plaza and in Johnson County.
The stores at 439 W. 47th St. and in Olathe at 686 N. Central St. expect to close in February, according to representatives with Dick’s Sporting Goods, which acquired Moosejaw earlier this year.
Moosejaw, once a Michigan-based brand, sells camping, hiking and biking gear, as well as shoes, thermals and other clothing items. The store Plaza store opened in 2012.
Moosejaw’s only stores that will remain open are in Birmingham, Michigan; Salt Lake City; and Bentonville, Arkansas.
The company will shutter 11 stores in total.
“This move supports our business optimization efforts and will allow us to operate more efficiently, quickly leverage best practices across our outdoor business and drive our long-term success,” the company told The Star in a statement.
Goods will continue to be sold online at moosejaw.com.
Employees at Moosejaw’s Kansas City area locations told The Star they could not comment.
Dick’s has nine stores in the Kansas City area, including in Zona Rosa at 8665 N.W. Prairie View Road and Town Center Plaza at 11801 Nall Ave.
The company also owns outdoor retailer Public Lands, which has locations in Atlanta, Pittsburgh and Columbus, Ohio.
