Partly thanks to Patrick Mahomes, Texas-based fast food joint Whataburger will open its Olathe location in November.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is part of a team of investors who own KMO Burger LLC, a Whataburger franchisee. If all goes as planned, Mahomes’ newest Johnson County location will open at 14123 W. 135th St. on Nov. 6.

“We’ve been pleased with the reception that Kansas and Missouri has given us, and we’ve been anxious to open more,” said Jay Battle, the franchisee’s chief operating officer.

Several other KC-area Whataburgers are corporate-owned, including one at 9505 Metcalf Ave., in Blue Springs at 905 N.W. Highway 7 and in Lee’s Summit at 1460 N.W. Douglas St.

So far, KMO has opened six locations, with a company mission to open 30 across Kansas and Missouri in the next seven years.

Up next: Parkville, Grandview, Lawrence — and maybe more in Johnson County.

Battle said they see Shawnee and Lenexa as potential spots. He’d also like to see one open in St. Joseph.

“We plan to keep busy,” he said.

The first Whataburger opened in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1950. Its triple meat and Southern bacon burgers arrived in the Kansas City area when the Lee’s Summit location opened in 2021.
