At the top of a long gravel drive surrounded by fields in south Johnson County, Amy Roberts’ barn fits into its country landscape.

Open its heavy wooden doors, however, and one finds, not farm animals, but caffeinated Johnson Countians.

At Serendipity’s Daily Grind at 4674 W. 183rd St. in Stilwell, customers can now sip lattes and munch on pastries inside revamped horse stables. Though it’s void of pigs, chickens and goats, a white Great Pyrenees named Riesling (like the wine) may ask patrons for a head scratch.

The coffee shop, which opened in June, is an all-ages, early-hours addition to the Serendipity Farm & Wine vineyard, just east of the Overland Park Arboretum.

Baristas pull espresso shots inside a barn surrounded by fields of grape vines, open since 2020 for wine tasting and weddings. At the beginning of this year, Roberts decided she wanted to extend the farm’s hours and give nearby residents a quality cup of coffee.

“I saw a need for a coffee shop out this way, and I thought this would be a unique place,” Roberts said.

The staff makes some of its syrups by hand — sweetening coffee drinks with fresh lavender, strawberries and blueberries.

Daily Grind is open from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. After noon, the space doubles as a wine tasting room, offering wine and grazing boards until 8 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 5 p.m. Sundays.

Families and friends can now gather in the space from morning to evening.

“Both coffee and wine bring people together, and that’s what I love about that,” Roberts said.

Roberts said she inherited her love of wine from her father. When she was looking for spots to be closer to her parents in 2019, she fell in love with the property. After deciding it would be the perfect agritourism business, she took a leap and opened Serendipity’s barn doors to the public the following year.

Roberts’ first impression of the property: It was covered with dozens of colorful, flapping butterflies. Observant visitors might notice the insects have inspired the business’s decor.

“Butterflies signify transformation, and that’s exactly what was going on in my life, and that’s kind of carried through the whole business,” she said.

The barn interior is furnished with antique furniture, wine barrels and cow print decor. A spacious outdoor patio looks out on six miniature horses enclosed in a pen, a favorite for children, Roberts said.

“I’m already surprised by how many people have come in and come back,” said barista manager Marissa Siegrist. “I feel like we’ve already gotten a good group of local regulars who love us.”
