A lot has changed since Lee’s Summit Medical Center opened its current campus 19 years ago. In addition to health care advances, Lee’s Summit’s population has increased from around 85,000 in 2007 to more than 107,000 in 2025.

To better meet these needs, the medical center recently broke ground on a $60 million campus expansion that will include two new nursing units, 26 additional patient rooms, upgraded support areas and a fully redesigned emergency department featuring nine more beds.

“This is in response to the continued community growth in the Lee’s Summit region within the city and in the outlying areas,” said Gabe Clements, the medical center’s CEO. “By being able to expand the capacity, it allows us also to modernize our facility.”

LSMC draws the majority of its patients from Lee’s Summit, although a significant percentage come from regional population centers such as Harrisonville, Warrensburg or even Sedalia.

Although Lee’s Summit Medical Center campus was completed in 2007, the hospital dates back to 1978 when it opened at 600 NW Murray Road. This will be the first update to the current emergency department since this hospital campus opened.

“Our ER expansion is a bump-out addition that adds nine beds and approximately 3,500 square feet that is new construction and brings the ER entrance farther to the road as part of our main campus,” Clements said.

The emergency department is increasing its patient beds from 13 to 22.

“What our patients will see is a new more accessible emergency department entry, a whole new lobby and process for registering patients, and we’ll have additional triage space that will allow us to get them quickly assessed,” Clements added. “We’ll have more in-patient beds so patients will have quicker access to an in-patient bed if they need to be admitted.”

The additional 26 in-patient rooms will take Lee’s Summit Medical Center from 88 to 114 beds. This expansion will add two wings to the hospital’s existing third floor.

Support services upgrades will expand the laboratory and pharmacy areas as well as food service.

“We’re doing a complete renovation and expansion of our cafeteria dining room and food service area to provide more accessible cafeteria dining options,” Clement said.

An added benefit of the kitchen expansion is its positive impact on a long-running community partnership between LSMC and Lee’s Summit Meals on Wheels, a local nonprofit. The organization’s volunteers deliver meals prepared at the hospital’s kitchen to around 140 clients each week.

“Our long relationship with Meals on Wheels is a program that will be supported as part of the kitchen expansion,” he added. “We can accommodate all of the appropriate meals and diets that are required.”

Due to the additional patient beds and expanded support services, LSMC officials estimate the creation of around 30 additional health care and support jobs.

In all, the project will add close to 21,000 square feet with completion expected in 2027.

With City of Lee’s Summit officials predicting approximately 40,000 new residents over the next 30 years, Lee’s Summit Medical Center is also preparing for additional growth.

“With these additional expansions, we’re able to take care of those patients needing care today and those who will continue to need care through community growth in the future,” Clements said.

Lee’s Summit Medical Center is a part of HCA Midwest Health with more than 150 HCA locations within the Kansas City region.

“Since 2023, Lee’s Summit Medical Center being part of HCA Midwest Health, we’ve invested over $90 million in the Lee’s Summit community,” Clements said, including facility improvements such as a major expansion to the hospital’s intensive-care unit, a new CareNow Urgent Care facility and a new ambulatory surgery center.
