Apartments in Historic Northeast set to become mixed-income housing

A trio of fading, partially boarded-up apartments just off Independence Avenue are expected to get new life through a $4.8 million renovation.

Brinshore Development out of Northbrook, Ill., and the Housing Authority of Kansas City have teamed up on a joint venture to rejuvenate three two-story apartments in the 500 block of Brooklyn Avenue into 24 income-restricted apartment units and six market-rate apartments.

“Market rate in this case would still probably qualify as affordable units,” said Bob Long, a development services specialist for the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City.

The Land Clearance for Redevelopment Authority approved a 10-year, 100 percent property tax abatement request at its Wednesday meeting to support the joint venture. The project also contemplates a combination of state and federal low-income housing tax credits.

The apartments are across the street from the Scuola Vita Nuova Charter School, which occupies the former site of the Don Bosco Center. It is part of the Garfield Urban Renewal Area, which covers a broad portion of the Historic Northeast.
