VML, once a startup advertising agency that occupied a corner of a former terminal at Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport, is set to soon occupy most of the building.

The Kansas City Council on Thursday passed a lease extension that would give the global agency 11 more years at the airport, as well as nearly 100,000 square feet.

VML’s expansion at its offices will make room for up to 886 employees. The firm employs 510 there now.

VML has been a tenant at the airport since 1995. Next year marks the firm’s 25th year in business.

“VML started in Kansas City, and 2017 will be our 25th anniversary,” said Jon Cook, VML’s CEO, in a written statement. “We’re proud to have grown from a staff of three founders to more than 2,500 people in 28 offices across six continents, but we remain loyal to our roots and Kansas City.”
