Yard House plans a restaurant in the Power & Light District

The Power & Light District has signed a significant tenant to the high profile — but vacant — corner of 13th and Main streets.

Yard House Restaurants has a building permit for 1300 Main St. and plans to open its second area restaurant there in early spring 2015.

Robert Hey, development director for Darden Restaurants, the owner of the Yard House chain, confirmed Friday that construction is likely to begin in August. The space at 13th and Main has been vacant since the opening of the Power & Light District in 2007.

The restaurant across from the Midland theater will be the area’s second Yard House. The first opened in 2006 at Legends Outlets in western Wyandotte County.

Officials with the Cordish Co., the owner of the downtown entertainment district, declined to comment Friday.

Yard House is known for its wide variety of beers and ales on tap as well as the quality of its American cuisine.

The first Yard House opened in 1996 in Southern California, and today the chain has locations in 19 states, according to its website. Yard House is scheduled to open at least five new restaurants in 2014, the website said.
