Take a look at the massive $125M Johnson County sports complex now under construction

After years of planning, construction of the new 420,000-square-foot sports complex in south Overland Park is well underway.

The complex, called the AdventHealth Sports Park at Bluhawk, is being built in two phases, with the first portion complete in the fall or winter of 2024, said Samuel Noel, spokesman for Bluhawk. Initially, developers had said the first portion would be ready by spring.

Construction continues on the $125 million AdventHealth Sports Park at Bluhawk, which includes a 3,500-seat arena, near 159th Street and U.S. 69 Highway in south Overland Park.

The first phase will include an ice rink, four basketball courts, 40,000 square feet of turf, a sprinting track and a café on the southwest corner of U.S. Highway 69 and 159th Street.

“The Bluhawk development is on the leading edge of youth and amateur competitive and recreational sports in Kansas City and across the country,” Kent Price, president of developer Price Brothers Management Co., said when the project’s groundbreaking was announced.

Developers have said the project will cost $125 million.

The complex sits in the 277-acre Bluhawk district, which has several new tenants and is still largely under development.

Current restaurant and retail tenants include Whataburger, Andy’s Frozen Custard, Cosentino’s Market and Of Course Kitchen & Co. fine-dining restaurant.

Price Brothers secured $70 million of tax incentives through STAR bonds for the project, at the time competing with another proposed complex with an ice rink just miles away in Olathe.

Plans for the second phase of the complex — the remaining 170,000 square feet — include additional basketball, volleyball and pickleball courts and another ice rink.

Developers did not provide a projected opening date for phase two.
