After years of planning, a new housing development is coming to this Johnson County city

Homes in the new development, named the Timber Creek Subdivision, will have 3-4 bedrooms, 2-3 bathrooms and 2-3 car garages, according to a June 23 letter to the Edgerton, Kansas, from Rausch Coleman Homes. Leaders of a southwest Johnson County community that is starved for housing on Thursday approved its first new single-family housing development in almost two decades, according to a news release.

In an unanimous vote, the Edgerton City Council approved a conceptual plan proposed by developer Rausch Coleman Homes to build about 275 homes on more than 80 acres at the southwest corner of Braun and Eighth streets, according to the news release from ElevateEdgerton!, a public-private economic development partnership with the city.

The new housing development is much needed for the community that sees its population nearly triple each day as employees head to work at a fast-growing business park there. The new development has been years in the making.

“Four years ago, we sat down with Rausch Coleman for the first time and started working on a project that would be transformative for the Edgerton community,” ElevateEdgerton! President James Oltman said in the release. “Tonight (Thursday) is the culmination of a lot of hard work.”

Housing has been a top priority for residents of Edgerton, Oltman said. The project will offer opportunities for first-time home buyers, growing families and seniors.

The project is designed to be a walkable, connected community that maintains the city’s small-town, neighborhood feel. It will be built in four phases and will include a walking trail, playground and sidewalks.

Construction is expected to begin next year.
