Restaurant inspections for Feb. 4

The Kansas Department of Agriculture cited these operations for 7 or more priority health code violations:

▪ Granite City Food & Brewery, Legends Outlets Kansas City, 1701 Village West Parkway, Kansas City, Kan., had 12 priority violations during a Dec. 1 inspection following a complaint, including when an employee handled ready-to-eat bread without using gloves, but upon seeing the inspector the employee put gloves on (bread discarded). It had 5 priority violations during a Dec. 21 follow-up inspection.

“All issues have been corrected,” said Angie Compton, manager.

▪ Casa Agave, Legends Outlets Kansas City, 1314 Village West Parkway, Kansas City, Kan., had 7 priority violations during a Dec. 8 routine inspection, including no soap at the hand-sink at the end of the cook-line.

“It was a mistake and we will try not to do it one more time,” said Jose Lopez, general manager.

▪ Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant, Park Place, 11652 Ash St., Leawood, had 7 priority violations during a Jan. 13 routine inspection, including 20 dishes stored as clean but with food residue on the food contact surfaces. It had 2 priority violations during a Jan. 26 follow-up inspection.

Corporate officials did not return phone calls seeking comment on the violations.

▪ R&K Downtown Cafe, 108 S. Elm St., Gardner, had 7 priority violations during a Nov. 13 licensing inspection, including gravy and chicken soup held at improper temperatures (food heated to the proper temperatures). It had no priority violations during a Nov. 24 follow-up inspection.

“We opened on Nov. 10 and we asked the department to come in and give us guidelines,” said Rhonda Lee, partner. “We are new owners and they gave us great direction. They gave us a class on food handling on Dec. 21. Since we had a new staff we felt that was appropriate”

The Kansas City Health Department cited these operations for seven or more critical health code violations:

▪ GB Chinese, 4820 N. Oak Trafficway, had 14 critical violations during a Nov. 24, routine inspection, including white rice and chicken held at improper temperatures. It had no critical violations during a Nov. 25 follow-up inspection.

“There were some issues with the equipment but it got corrected immediately,” said Truman Yeh, owner.

▪ Crowne Plaza Hotel, 1301 Wyandotte, had 11 critical violations during a Nov. 26 routine inspection, including live and dead roaches in the bar area and gnat activity in the warewashing area. It had no critical violations during a Dec. 5 follow-up inspection.

Hotel officials did not return phone calls seeking comment on the violations.

▪ Blue Bird Bistro, 1700 Summit St., had 10 critical violations during a Nov. 26 routine inspection, including sliced tomatoes, blue cheese crumbles, whole milk and Half & Half held at improper temperatures. It had no critical violations during a Dec. 3 follow-up inspection.

“We have cooperated fully with the health department and plan on getting an ‘A’ on our next health inspection,” said Jane Zieha, owner.

▪ Kokoro Maki House, 340 W. 75th St., had 9 critical violations during a Dec. 29 routine inspection, including kimchi, cooked eggs and cooked rice strips at improper temperatures (food discarded). It had no critical violations during a Jan. 6 follow-up inspection.

Restaurant officials declined to comment on the violations.

▪ Silver Spoon Cafe, 120 W. 12th St., had 9 critical violations during a Dec. 22 routine inspection, including foods in omelet make-table held at improper temperatures. It had no critical violations during a Dec. 31 follow-up inspection.

“It was at the end of the shift and things get pushed to the side. It was just over temperature, unfortunately,” said Steve Nelson, manager.

▪ Tiffany Greens Golf Course, 6100 N.W. Tiffany Springs Parkway, had 9 critical violations during a Dec. 16 routine inspection, including pulled pork in the cooler with a date-mark of Dec. 1 and marinara sauce in the cooler with a date-mark of Dec. 6 (food discarded). It had 4 critical violations during a Dec. 23 follow-up inspection and no critical violations during a Jan. 2 follow-up inspection.

Officials with Tiffany Greens did not return phone calls seeking comment on the violations.

▪ Bo Lings, Zona Rosa, 8670 N.W. Prairie View Road, had 8 critical violations during a Dec. 15 routine inspection, including desserts in reach-in cooler with a date-mark of Dec. 5, beyond the 7-day limit and a repeat violation (desserts discarded). It had no critical violations during a Dec. 22 follow-up inspection.

“Everything has been fixed,” said Theresa Ng, co-owner.

▪ The Drunken Fish, Power & Light District, 14 E. 14th St., had 8 critical violations during a Dec. 17 routine inspection, including “numerous” fruit flies around the front bar. It had no critical violations during a Dec. 26 follow-up inspection.

A manager declined to comment on the violations.

▪ Express Shop No. 3, deli, 6201 St. John, had 8 critical violations during a Nov. 25 routine inspection, including fruit flies around the 3-compartment sink. It had 6 critical violations during a Dec. 4 follow-up inspection and no critical violations during a Dec. 11 follow-up inspection.

A manager declined to comment on the violations.

▪ 54th Street Grill and Bar, Zona Rosa, 7200 N.W. 86th Terr., had 8 critical violations during a Dec. 17 routine inspection, including chicken tortilla soup held at improper temperatures (soup discarded). It had 3 critical violations during a Dec. 22 follow-up inspection and 2 critical violations during a Dec. 29 follow-up inspection.”

“All the violations have been corrected,” said Doug Bretz, vice president of the Kansas City area for 54th Street.

▪ Tasty Thai, 7104 N.W. Prairie View Road, had 8 critical violations during a Nov. 24 routine inspection, including beef flavoring stored in doggie treat container. It had 1 critical violation during a Dec. 4 follow-up inspection.

“It was just an empty dog treat container but we threw it away,” said Dom Wiruhayarn, co-owner.

▪ China Dragon, 7809 N. Oak Trafficway, had 7 critical violations during a Dec. 1 routine inspection, including a bin of raw whole fish above cut vegetables and boxes of wonton wrappers in the cooler. It had 1 critical violation during a Dec. 5 follow-up inspection and no critical violations during a Dec. 9 follow-up inspection.

A restaurant spokeswoman declined to comment on the violations.

▪ Ingredient, Country Club Plaza, 4807 Jefferson St., had 7 critical violations during a Dec. 15 routine inspection, including only 3 of the 5 employees on duty had Food Handler cards. It had no priority violations during a Dec. 22 follow-up inspection, 2 critical violations during a Jan. 6 inspection following a complaint, and no critical violations during a Jan. 12 follow-up inspection.

Officials with Ingredient did not return phone calls seeking comment on the violations.

▪ 12th & Baltimore, Hotel Phillips, 106 W. 12th St., had 7 critical violations during a Dec. 17 routine inspection, including foods in the grill make-table and food in the upstairs cooler held at improper temperatures (food discarded). It had 2 critical violations during a Dec. 26 follow-up inspection and no critical violations during a Jan. 5 follow-up inspection.

“We were having issues and we actually replaced the compressor. The cooler was broken and we got it fixed,” said Eric Cunningham, food and beverage manager.
