Werner’s Fine Sausages rolls out food truck; Haha’s Pizza coming to midtown

Werner’s Fine Sausages, a German deli in Mission, is now on wheels.

Werner’s serves more than a dozen different varieties of sausages at its shop — from Portuguese to South African — as well as custom blends. It also features six sausages on its outside grill from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturdays.

But when Johnson Drive road construction limited access to the shop, the owners started working on plans for a food truck. Werner’s on Wheels wasn’t finished before the Johnson Drive construction ended, but it will now make the rounds around Kansas City.

“I don’t know if you have been by the store on Saturdays. There is quite a line but it moves fast. We are taking that on the road,” said co-owner David Miller.

Werner’s on Wheels will offer six or seven different sausages at each stop, tailoring the flavors to the market, including its best-selling BLT Dog with house-cured bacon, lettuce, tomato and spicy garlic aioli on a bier cheddar brat, along with the Elotes Dog with corn, onions, mayonnaise, lime and Parmesan cheese on a knockwurst.

This Saturday it plans to park at Richard L. Berkley Riverfront Park from 3 to 8 p.m.

Werner’s traces its roots to a Swedish store, Swanson’s, which was founded in 1898, in Westport.

Werner Wolhart purchased the shop and relocated to 5736 Johnson Drive in Mission in 1974. But the owner of Swanson’s didn’t sell the rights to the name so Wolhart changed it to Werner’s, said David Miller, who purchased the business with his wife, Judy, in October 1995.

Other restaurant updates

▪ Two brothers are taking the former Santora’s Pizza spot at 3834 Main St. and plan to open Haha’s Pizza Hub there next week.

▪ Equip-bid Auctions sold most of what remained of equipment and memorabilia of Waldo’s 75th Street Brewery — Pabst bar signs, TVs, wood-topped tables — at an auction that last week.

Many people are still asking about the brewery equipment but the owners have it in storage.
