Now open

Mitch and Heather Gerdes have opened The Java Garage coffee shop in The Pink Daisy, a furniture boutique at 1413 W. 11th St.

Java Garage serves a variety of coffee drinks, iced tea and hot chocolate. It also will have a monthly drink special, like this month’s The Golden Road (Irish cream and butterscotch latte).

It is open First Friday weekends: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. On other Saturdays it is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Coming soon

John Sarkis wants his new restaurant and bar to honor America’s heroes.

The U.S. Army veteran’s heroes list includes the military, first responders and nurses like his late wife, Jeaneeta Love, who died of cancer last June.

Sarkis plans tributes at his new Screamin’ Eagle Bar & Grill, which will open in the former Woodsweather Cafe spot at 1414 W. Ninth St. this spring. He’s already gutted the space to the walls and put up brick-like paneling and natural wood trim.

It will serve a weekday breakfast, including pancakes, waffles and Bananas Foster French toast, as well as a Sunday brunch.

Lunch and dinner menu items — from the scratch kitchen — will include smoked meats from its custom-built smoker, chicken and waffles, sandwiches and wraps, and hand-cut fries.

He also plans to put up a new mural on the east side of the building.
