Poll: Should tipping at restaurants be eliminated?
Will tipping become passe in America?
On Nov. 11, Joe’s Crab Shack (which has locations in the Kansas City area) became the latest restaurant chain to announce that it is testing the no-tip policy at 18 restaurants.
“It’s simple, really. We believe that consistently great service should always be included in the menu price, so we are taking the responsibility for paying the service staff,” said Ray Blanchette, CEO of Ignite Restaurants, in a press release. “I personally believe tipping is an antiquated model and you have seen most businesses in America migrate away from it over the last 50 to 100 years.”
The decision follows New York, where Union Square Hospitality Group announced in October that it would eliminate tips at restaurants while simultaneously increasing menu prices.
Locally, The Sundry and Howard’s grocery and cafe also discourage tipping.
As the movement grows, we want to know what you think of the idea.
