Smallcakes A Cupcakery opens on 39th Street
Smallcakes A Cupcakery is now open on 39th Street’s restaurant row.
Earlier this year, Kevin Combs, an area franchisee, was in final negotiations to open a Smallcakes kiosk on the first floor of the Holiday Inn Express & Suites at the University of Kansas Hospital and Medical Center on Rainbow Boulevard.
That deal fell through. But a new deal a few blocks away got him a storefront.
The shop softly opened Friday at 1710 W. 39th St., but Combs is still waiting for his new pink and brown awning.
“We love it. There has just been tons and tons of foot traffic,” Combs said. “We have locations in every suburb, but this is our first in Kansas City, Mo.”
The new Smallcakes shop will sell a variety of gourmet cupcakes.
Every day it will have 15 regular flavors including creamy lemon, caramel crunch, and peanut butter cup.
But it also will have five more special flavors that will rotate out of a list of 135, including pink champagne, root beer float, Lick My Butterfinger, chocolate malt, maple bacon, PB&J, and Fruity Pebbles.
Prices are $3.25 per cupcake or $36 per dozen.
The shop will be open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Combs is planning a grand opening in about two weeks.
Rock-N-Moroccan and Beignet had previously operated in the space.
Combs also will be shopping for a food truck this weekend with plans to start a Smallcakes truck in the next few weeks.
