JoyceKC: New quick serve seafood for Waldo, bakery for 39th Street
Malcolm Thomas is taking over a former Dairy Queen building in Waldo for a new quick serve seafood restaurant.
MT Catfish Cabin is scheduled to open in early November at 434 W. 85th St.
Thomas has spent a couple of months remodeling the space. When it reopens as MT Catfish Cabin, he plans to offer mostly fried fish, including catfish, tilapia, and basa, and fried sides like hush puppies, okra and mushrooms. He’ll also offer baked catfish. A retail area will sell fresh fish, cakes and pies to-go.
“When it is welcoming and clean and you have good food, people will come,” he said.
His son, Mark Thomas, also will help out in the new restaurant.
Dairy Queen had long operated in the building and then 85th St. Eats and Sweets for a short time.
New bakery for 39th Street

Owner Shero Alloush offers such items as pistachio baklava, almond fingers, Warbat (crunchy layers of phyllo dough with sweet cheese and pistachio), sesame cookies, Turkish coffee and more.
