Savory Spice Shop is now open in Brookside.

The Denver-based chain sells high-quality, fresh-ground spices and handcrafted seasonings. It took part of the former James Hallmark Shop space at 6245 Brookside Blvd.

Mike and Janet Johnston opened the first Savory Spice Shop in Denver in 2004 and they now have more than 30 locations.

The company offers more than 500 products, including cubed crystallized ginger, peppermint vanilla bean sugar, red enchilada seasoning, hazelnut extract, Hibiscus flower, coarse Himalayan Pink sea salt, Madagascar “Bourbon” vanilla beans, Wasabi powder, brown sugar and spice honey ham rub, chimichurri steak dressing and marinade, cheddar cheese powder, four cheese tableside sprinkle, dill dip, Dutch cocoa powder, fajita seasoning and salad seasonings.

Its hand-crafted blends are made in small batches and shipped to its stores weekly. The stores also will make some blends on-site.

The new Kansas City store has its own unique blend — the KC Strip Steak Seasoning. The shop is currently offering free samples of the new steak seasoning, as well as its Pyramid Peak lemon pepper and Team Sweet Mama’s KC Style Rub.

It plans to have a grand opening later this year.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The James Hallmark Shop closed in early 2012 after 25 years of operations. BKS Nails recently opened on the east side of the space.
