One of two Walmart Neighborhood Markets on Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park will be closing.

Walmart said it has made the “difficult decision” to close its store at 10303 Metcalf. The store, which was underperforming, is scheduled to close on June 2. The pharmacy will close on May 26, and the pharmacy staff will work with customers to transfer prescriptions to another location.

In a statement, Walmart spokeswoman Lauren Willis said: “We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our Overland Park location at 10303 Metcalf. We look forward to serving them at our other stores in the surrounding communities and on walmart.com.”

In 2003, Walmart opened Walmart Neighborhood Markets less than two miles apart on Metcalf. At just over 40,000 square feet, the Neighborhood Markets are much smaller than traditional supermarkets or Walmarts but offer the most popular grocery items, including produce, deli foods, fresh meats and dairy items, frozen seafood, general merchandise and health and beauty aids.

The location at 9000 Metcalf will remain open.
