▪ Specialty food retailer Vom Fass plans to open on the Country Club Plaza.

According to the company, area franchisees Brett and Autumn Guthrie are finalizing a lease but it would not confirm the location. Sources said Vom Fass plans to open at 515 Nichols Road, former home of Gymboree. No opening date was available.

Vom Fass offers European oils, vinegars, spirits, wines and spices — from fruit vinegar to 60-year-old scotch — as well as artisan food products. It sources its products from vendors who use “natural processes, sustainable agriculture and ethical sourcing.” Vom Fass stands for “on tap” and many in-shop products can be sampled from one of its barrels, cask pyramids, glass balloons, and vinegar and oil crocks.

The company was founded in Germany about 20 years ago and has more than 300 franchise locations worldwide, including nearly 30 stores in the U.S.

Highwoods Properties, owners of the Plaza, said its policy is not to comment on “current or prospective lease details.”

▪ A year ago, Landry's Inc. closed its M&S Grill — a more casual spinoff of McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurant — and replaced it with another casual spinoff concept based on its Morton's the Steakhouse restaurants.

But Morton's Grille didn’t last long. The company opened the restaurant in late September 2014 at 4646 J.C. Nichols Parkway. It closed Saturday.

Glenn Stephenson, vice president and division manager for Highwoods Properties, issued this statement on Monday: “The Landry’s Restaurant Group has announced that they will be closing Morton’s Grille. While we are sad to see them go, Highwoods is committed to finding a new concept that will further enhance the Country Club Plaza.”

Tim Whitlock, senior vice president of operations for Morton’s Grille, issued this statement: “Morton’s Grille in Kansas City, closed its doors on Saturday....to make way for a new venture desired by the landlord. We are grateful for the support by local-area residents.”

Only two other Morton’s Grille locations are listed on its website, one in Texas and a new one in New York.
