Restaurant & grocery store inspections for Oct. 13
The Kansas City Health Department cited these operations for 7 or more critical health code violations.
▪ Moonlight Sushi Bar & Grill, 8678 N.E., Flintlock Road, had 10 critical violations during an Oct. 2 routine inspection, including fruit flies throughout the kitchen (the restaurant could not provide its most recent pest control invoice).
“We are changing things already. The pest control came in the next day,” said Richard Wu, co-owner.
The restaurant had 4 critical violations during an Oct. 8 follow-up inspection.
▪ Price Chopper, 8430 Wornall Road, had 7 critical violations during a Sept. 30 routine inspection, including yogurt and sour cream held in the grab-and-go cooler at improper temperatures (food discarded).
Price Chopper officials did not return phone calls seeking comment on the violations.
▪ R.C.’s Restaurant & Back Door Lounge, 330 E. 135th St., had 7 critical violations during a Sept. 23 routine inspection, including chicken, eggs, sausages, and diced ham held at improper temperatures (food discarded).
“They were all taken care of right at that moment and this is not the way we operate. I think we had some refrigerators that had gone out earlier that day,” said David Van Noy, owner.
The restaurant had no critical violations during an Oct. 10 follow-up inspection.
The Kansas City Health Department temporarily closed two restaurants.
▪ Subway, 4227 N. Oak Trafficway, was temporarily closed on Oct. 6 because of a 3-compartment sink back-up. Subway corrected the problem and was allowed to reopen.
Subway officials did not return phone calls seeking comment on the violations.
▪ Chipotle Mexican Grill, 8700 N. Flintlock Road, was temporarily closed after an Oct. 7 inspection when the walk-in cooler was not functioning (a repeat violation and a repeat closure). All potentially hazardous food was discarded at the time of the inspection.
Chipotle was reinspected on Oct. 8 and allowed to reopen.
A manager declined to comment on the violations.

▪ Lucky Chinese Buffet, 7818 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan., had 8 priority violations during an Oct. 7 follow-up inspection, including no time marked for when food on the hot hold table was to be moved to the buffet or discarded.
A manager said the owner was out of the country and the manager declined to comment on the violations.
▪ Standees The Entertaining Eatery, 3935 W. 69th Terr., Prairie Village, had 8 priority violations during an Oct. 7 routine inspection, including open container of milk, meatballs, chicken, pasta, salsa, potato salad, and ground pork without date marks.
“Five (of the violations) were corrected on-site while the inspector was there and the others were corrected immediately after. We take this very seriously and always strive for not having any violations,” said Justin Scott, spokesman for the company.
▪ Chapala Mexican Restaurant, 105 S. Clairborne, Olathe, had 7 priority violations during an Oct. 6 routine inspection, including employee using bare hands to put lettuce and tortilla on the customer’s plate (the plate went out to the customer before it could be corrected but the bowl of lettuce was discarded).
Restaurant officials did not return phone calls seeking comment on the violations.
▪ Evergreen Chinese Restaurant, 13034 Kansas Ave., Bonner Springs, had 7 priority violations during an Oct. 7 follow-up inspection, including cooked chicken and ribs with no date mark in the cooler.
Restaurant officials declined to comment on the violations.
▪ Hy-Vee Food Store, 7620 State Line Road, Prairie Village, had 7 priority violations during an Oct. 8 follow-up inspection, including raw packages of turkey bacon stored above raw package of pork bacon (package of raw turkey bacon moved).
“All the violations were corrected on-site,” said Ryan Baker, manager of perishables.
