This popular Johnson County ice cream shop closed. Now it’s returning in a new spot
After closing in Leawood’s Town Center Plaza, Cold Stone Creamery plans a return to Leawood but kitty-corner in a sister shopping center, Town Center Crossing.
An early 2022 opening is scheduled at 4535 W. 119th St., former home of locally owned Glace Artisan Ice Cream.
Cold Stone Creamery first opened in Town Center Plaza in 2003. Kevin Garrett, area developer for Cold Stone Creamery, said the Town Center Plaza location closed in 2009 when its lease expired.
“The landlord wanted to move us to the back side of the Leawood Town Center and we refused that relocation,” he said. “Now we found another location that fits us well and we are ready to come back to Leawood, almost 13 years later.”
Cold Stone Creamery handcrafts its ice cream in the stores daily. The ice cream can be customized by combining a variety of mix-ins on a frozen granite stone. It also has shakes, smoothies, ice cream cakes, ice cream cookies, ice cream cupcakes and more.
It also has area locations on the Country Club Plaza, Independence, Olathe, two in the Northland, the Legends Outlets Kansas City in Kansas City, Kansas, and Lawrence.
A Ward Parkway Center shop is planned for 2022, in the former Starbucks location. Starbucks relocated to 9013 State Line Road, a freestanding cafe with a drive-thru.
“The Kansas City market has been great to us, and we’re excited to begin expanding in the market,” Garrett said.
