Not corn dogs, they’re Korean-style hot dogs, and they’ve arrived in Johnson County

A new Korean hot dog spot kicked off with a soft, three-hour opening Thursday in Overland Park. By 4 p.m., about 20 customers were waiting in line, and all the tables were taken.

Ssong’s Hotdog was to officially open at 1 p.m. Friday in the Indian Creek Shopping Center, at 10308 Metcalf Ave.

In a twist on traditional corn dogs, these are coated in a batter of rice and wheat flour and stuffed with a variety of ingredients — from mozzarella cheese sticks to spicy sausage. Sauces and toppings include ketchup, mustard, sugar, Parmesan cheese, honey mustard, sweet chile and spicy mayonnaise. It also has tornado fries (potato cut in a spiral shape) and waffle fries.

More options will be introduced in coming weeks, including hot dogs stuffed with potato and sausage, crab sticks, and fish cakes, along with a spicy rice cake soup.

“I’m from South Korea and wanted to show our culture,” said area franchise Keith Ahn.

The U.S. franchiser is based in Maryland, where there are two locations. Three other shops are in the works in Maryland and New Jersey.

It first opened in South Korea in 2013 and now also has locations in China, Japan and Vietnam.

Ahn also owns the Oriental Supermarket and Tous les Jours bakery in the Indian Creek Shopping Center. He plans to open a Korean rice cake spot in the center later this year.
