Wichita-based health club company acquires two large Johnson County fitness centers

Wichita-based Genesis Health Clubs is expanding again.

The company said it has acquired all seven of The Athletic Club locations, formerly operating as Prairie Life Fitness, in three states, including area locations in Olathe and Overland Park.

Genesis Health Clubs owner Rodney Steven II said the Athletic Club locations are “strong, amenity-rich” operations with swimming pools and top of the line equipment. They also are in key markets, so he said it was an acquisition he couldn’t pass up, even during the pandemic.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to strengthen and consolidate our position in these markets,” he said in a statement. “We’re focusing on making the right moves now to thrive and come out stronger on the other side.”

The Athletic Club owner Tony Dahmen couldn’t be reached for comment.

Genesis now has 57 clubs in Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska and Oklahoma. It had acquired four Aspen Athletic Clubs in the Des Moines area in late 2019 and converted them to Genesis.

The area Athletic Club locations are at 10351 Barkley St., Overland Park, and 13655 S. Alden St., Olathe.
