It’s hot and time for National Ice Cream Day. Here’s the scoop on some new KC options

As temperatures rise, Kansas Citians can cool down at several new ice cream shops — just in time for Sunday’s National Ice Cream Day.

President Ronald Reagan designated the third Sunday of July as National Ice Cream Day on July 9, 1984, by Presidential Proclamation.

So here’s a look at the new ice cream outlets:

Creative Culture, Westport. Its gourmet milkshake bar offers a variety of flavors and toppings, including donuts, cinnamon rolls, cotton candy and cookies. It also offers craft workshops.

The owners added ice cream and gelato to their offerings in mid-June. The treats are made from scratch using organic cream and no artificial ingredients, corn syrup or gums. Flavors include birthday cake, nut buster, banana flambe and chocolate brownie.

It will celebrate National Ice Cream Day with two drive-thru tent events — 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday and 7 to 9 a.m. Sunday. Customers can buy the ice cream and gelato to take home. Everyone in the car wearing a mask will get a free sample scoop.

Chill in the Village, Prairie Village. Soft serve frozen yogurt, gourmet ice cream, sorbet, parfaits, smoothies, frozen yogurt cookie sandwiches, Brain Freezes (sorbet with Sprite) and more.

Summer Salt Ice Cream Co., Corinth Square in Prairie Village. Flavors include peach ginger snap, caramel turtle, local honey lavender, waffle toffee, strawberry rhubarb crisp, and blackberry chocolate flake. It also has a walk-up window.

Daylight Donuts shops in Basehor, Gardner and Leavenworth also are now selling Sylas and Maddy’s Homemade Ice Cream.

In other KC ice cream news, TravelAwaits, an online publication for travelers 50 and older, put River Market and Waldo favorite Betty Rae’s Ice Cream on its new list of “The 15 Tastiest Ice Cream Shops in the U.S.”

It gave a shout-out to Betty Rae’s seasonal flavor, Joe’s KC Burnt Ends & Sauce, as well as goat cheese, apricot and candied walnut; and Thou Mayest coffee ice cream.
