Will P&L’s Flying Saucer reopen? ‘Beerknurds’ want to know, and they want their plates

Flying Saucer Draught Emporium in the Power & Light District is no longer listed on the chain’s corporate website and its phone number is disconnected.

A spokesman for the company said P&L District developer Cordish Companies has been a Flying Saucer licensee for about a year. He declined to comment on the location and referred calls to the district.

Kansas City Flying Saucer’s last social media posts were on March 29 when it said it was currently closed. Members of its U.F.O. loyalty club, or “beerknurds,” are concerned, and some fans want their commemorative plates that adorn the location: “We care about the staff, the location, our beer community, and our beloved plates. Tell us the truth, does Cordish plan to reopen The Saucer?” one person posted on Facebook.

In a statement, Nick Benjamin, spokesman for the district, said: “We are in the process of working through with our tenants who is going to re-open or expand offerings in the ‘soft opening’ phase and what others plan to do as the rules evolve. ... Our goal of course is for as many tenants to open as soon as it can be safely done.”

Flying Saucer opened at 101 E. 13th St., on the north side of the district, in 2008. It has served more than 70 craft beers on tap and more in bottles and cans, along with a pub menu.

It also is known for its collector plates with more than a thousand lining the walls — from ones with images of President Lyndon Johnson and Lady Bird to vintage Masonic temple scenes.
