The metro’s first full-service Subway Café has opened in Overland Park.

Esquire magazine has described the Subway Cafés as Subway’s yuppie stepbrother. The cafes feature leatherette chairs and two order lines — one for drinks like espressos, lattes, mochas, cappuccinos, chai options, hot cocoa, tea and some frozen drink options, as well as pastries, and the other for Subway sandwiches, drinks and pastries.

So customers won’t have to go to Subway for their sandwiches and another outlet for their premium drinks.

Subway Cafe, opened Thursday at 11011 Antioch Road, just north of Hayward’s Pit Bar B Que at College Boulevard in Overland Park.

A Subway Cafe also opened in 2013 in Liberty Hospital but it is mostly a take-out only operation and does not serve pastries.

Subway also plans to open traditional Subway restaurants in the Cleaver II Blvd Shoppes at 47th and Troost, later this week, and in Lenexa City Center by early August. A new location in 39Rainbow, 3938 Rainbow Blvd. in Kansas City, Kan., opened Friday.

Subway also has a location at 504 Armour Road in North Kansas City but is building a new freestanding Subway nearby at 2105 Taney that is scheduled to open by early July. Corporate offices said the two locations will serve different markets so the franchisee plans to continue to operate both.
