Tanner’s Bar & Grill has been a neighborhood gathering place since it opened in Waldo in mid-1991.

But the location, at 7425 Broadway, is scheduled to shutter at the end of business Sunday, Oct. 21.

“We had a great time over there but our time is up,” said Matt Brentano, partner in Tanner’s. “We’ve opened a few new locations and we felt it was time to focus on those and let someone else serve Waldo.”

Brentano said he just renewed his lease for the spot a year ago but was able to work out a deal with his landlord, Joe Zwillenberg.

Reaction on social media was mixed, with customers saying: “Makes sense as it was always empty except for the same guys in the same spots every time I went” and “I really like Tanner’s so this is pretty upsetting.”

Tanner’s was founded in 1985 in Lenexa and now has 16 restaurants, including 13 locations in the metro, as well as locations in Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin. The Waldo location has about 20 employees, some of whom will move to the other locations.

The locally owned chain is known for its sports bar atmosphere and a menu that includes “Chicken Lips” (chicken tenders that come chargrilled or deep fried with a variety of sauces), sandwiches, specialty burgers and steak and drink specials.

“I’m sorry to see them go but I’m excited for the next chapter for Waldo,” Zwillenberg said. “And I’ve had a lot of interest in the space. My phone is busy lately.”
