Waldo ice cream shop adding River Market location
Two years after opening in Waldo, Betty Rae’s Ice Cream is expanding.
Owner David Friesen is taking a River Market space at 412 Delaware St., Suite D, for a summer opening.
"It's a great space. Really tall ceilings. I'm so excited to be in such an old historic part of the city," Friesen said. "You will be able to sit in the window eating ice cream and watch the streetcar go by."
Betty Rae's serves house-made ice cream, a dozen different selections at a time. Flavors can include peanut butter, lavender honey, jasmine green tea, s'mores and root beer, and seasonal selections like the current Chicken & Waffles.
It has specialty sundaes and build-your-own, apple cider floats, cold brew floats, build-your-own ice cream sandwiches and specialty ice cream sandwiches, Boozey shakes and floats, coffee drinks and more.
In the River Market, Betty Rae's neighbors will include Il Lazzarone Authentic Neapolitan Pizza, as well as the new Tribe restaurant and bar. Coffee shop, bar and bookstore Our Daily Nada also is set to open this summer.
"You'll have coffee, ice cream and pizza. If I lived there I would never leave the block," Friesen said.
Cafe al Dente formerly operated in the Betty Rae's spot for about 17 years. The owner said he wasn't able to renew his lease and closed in September.
