Plaza jeweler shutters store but may return as a seasonal pop-up

Five years after opening on the Country Club Plaza, Jet Couture Jewels has closed.

Mary Burger started her company as Jet Lag Jewels a dozen years ago, taking inspiration from her travels to France, India and Italy, as well as “old style Hollywood glamour.”

She said there aren’t many locally owned retailers who both design and make their goods and then sell them in a brick-and-mortar store. She tried it for five years at 4709 Central St. on the Plaza, a shopping center she has loved since she was a child. She brought in her grandmother’s sofa and used seashells and driftwood from her travels as display pieces for her jewelry.

But when her lease expired at the end of the year she decided not to renew it. She closed the store in mid-January and will now concentrate on more “cost-efficient” ways to sell her line, including online, at trunk shows, “Jet Girls Night Out” events and seasonal pop-up stores.

She also will continue to sell her pieces at TallulahBelle’s in downtown Overland Park and in the Webster House in the Crossroads.

“Both are the coolest places in Kansas City and I’m very honored they both have my line,” she said.

Plaza officials declined to comment on the closing.
