Firenza Pizza is joining the growing list of fast casual, hand-crafted, made-to-order pizza chains to enter the area market in recent years.

But it has one specialty pizza that is sure to help set it apart — Joe’s KC BBQ. It features Joe’s brisket, pulled pork, sausage and barbecue sauce, mozzarella and cheddar cheese, and red onions.

The 2,400-square-foot restaurant opened this week in the Shops at Boardwalk, 8624 N. Boardwalk Ave. The first 10 customers in line for the 11 a.m. opening Nov. 18 will get one free pizza a week for a year.

Menu items include the Primavera Fresca with Alfredo sauce, mozzarella, spinach, minced garlic, red onions, mushrooms, artichoke hearts and black olives, and its award-winning Chipotle Chicken with chipotle sauce, mozzarella and chicken, topped with crema, chipotle dressing and fresh pico de gallo sauce.

Customers also can create their own pizzas from a variety of choices in dough, sauce, cheese, meats, toppings and finishes.

Firenza also has oven-baked wings, salads and sides including meatballs, along with milkshakes.

Jennifer Gardner owns the area franchise with her daughter, Mel Ginther. They plan to open three more locations.

Dave Baer, co-founder, president and CEO of the fast casual pizza chain, was in town this week to help the new franchisees launch the restaurant. He said it is known for its fresh dough, made in-house, and high quality ingredients including vine-ripened tomato sauce.

“Everything is built right in front of your eyes and cooked in about three minutes in a stone hearth oven,” Baer said.

The company has 15 locations open and 150 in development.
