The Kansas City Health Department cited these operations for 7 or more critical health code violations.
Bannister Food Mart, retail grocery, 5501 E. Bannister Road, had 13 critical violations during an Aug. 21 routine inspection of the market, including a package of moldy sliced ham with an expiration date of Feb. 25 in the walk-in cooler (ham discarded). The deli department had 9 critical violations including one for when an employee did not wash his hands after leaving the restroom.

Ingredient, 1111 Main St., Suite 120, had 9 critical violations during an Aug. 11 routine inspection, including live cockroach activity in storage area/mop closet, a repeat violation.
Restaurant officials declined to comment.
It had no critical violations during an Aug. 22 follow-up inspection.
Rosso restaurant, Hotel Sorella, 901 W. 48th Place, had 9 critical violations during an Aug. 19 routine inspection, including build-up in soda nozzles at the bar and build-up on the coffee filter.
In a statement, Robert Leyva, general manager, said: “Unfortunately, violations that were procedural made the violations look superficially high. They included not having an asterisk on the menu for the proverbial “consumed undercooked foods,” we did not clip and store origin tags for shellfish and were unaware of the provision for a special license in Missouri to prepare Sous Vide dishes. Other violations like a thermos by the coffee machine, plastic spoon in a hand washing sink and not labeling dispensers of line cooking items were easily corrected immediately by removing the thermos, spoon and placing a label on the line items. Of course a re-inspection was necessary and all items were found to be in order. We understand the department’s standards do not allow distinction between a demerit for where a knife was stored (a violation we encountered) and pests in the soup (violation at another establishment), but want to ensure the public that the cleanliness and integrity of the food leaving our kitchen is without question.”
It had no critical violations during an Aug. 26 follow-up inspection.
Chelly’s Cafe, 218 W. 85th St., had 8 critical violations during an Aug. 13 routine inspection, including ready-to-eat foods with no “use by” date.
It had 4 critical violations during an Aug. 22 follow-up inspection and 3 critical violations during an Aug. 29 follow-up inspection.
Restaurant officials did not return phone calls seeking comment on the violations.
Update:
Hong’s Buffet, 6151 N.W. Barry Road, was inspected on Aug. 21 following a fire. While the inspector found no “significant” fire damage, the restaurant had 14 critical violations.
It had no critical violations during an Aug. 27 follow-up inspection and was allowed to reopen.
