The Kansas City Health Department has recognized 185 area food establishments with top grades for inspections in 2014.

Grade A Food Excellence Awards were given to full-service restaurants, fast-food operations, school cafeterias, bakeries, convenience stores, grocery stores and other food establishments.

The award winners include Bloom Baking Co. in the City Market, Crayola Cafe and Chips Chocolate Factory in Crown Center, Garza’s Goodies Chocolates & Confections in Waldo, Francesca’s at the Hotel Sorella Country Club Plaza Kansas City, Jovito’s Italian Cafe and Max’s Burgers & Gyros in south Kansas City, Reading Reptile in Brookside, Sasha’s Baking Co. downtown, and Suzy’s Deli and both Town-Topic Hamburgers in the Crossroads Arts Crossroads.

The award recognizes establishments that have demonstrated excellence in compliance with the city’s food code and other public health standards. While all food establishments in Kansas City are inspected regularly, the award winners substantially exceeded standards, the department said.

▪ Yum, a boutique bakery, is now open at 1614 W. 39th St. Owner An Zebley started out selling her goodies in the West Bottoms during First Friday weekends.

“I’m baking like people’s grandmothers used to bake - real eggs, real butter,” Zebley said.

Recent offerings have included mini-chocolate cream pies and root beer float cupcakes.

Metuka The Pastry House had previously operated in the space.
