B& B Theatres in Shawnee to raise curtain Thursday on new look

The first phase of the multimillion dollar remodel of B&B Theatres Shawnee 18 will debut at 6 p.m. Thursday.

The theater, in the WestGlen center at 16301 Midland Drive, Shawnee, will feature eight recliner auditoriums and other details set to be unveiled Thursday.

On Thursday and Friday customers also will receive a free small popcorn with the purchase of a movie ticket . But the company also will take donations for Variety - the Children's Charity of the United States.

In the past, B&B theater openings have raised $3,000 to $8,000 from the ‘free’ popcorn in just two days.

Two more auditoriums are scheduled to reopen by the end of November. Phase two of the extensive remodeling will begin in early 2017 with six more theaters converting to the recliner format.

The Gladstone-based B&B Theaters has been family owned and operated since 1924. It currently operates 408 screens in 50 locations in nine states.

Kendra Scott opening

Kendra Scott plans a soft opening this weekend in Town Center Crossing.

The jewelry store, at 4533 W. 119th St., Leawood, will open at 10 a.m. Friday. On Saturday it will have a gift-with-purchase event — spend more than $75 and receive a pair of Elle earrings, with a retail value of $55. It will have a grand opening event with entertainment and refreshments on Dec. 15.

Kendra Scott is a leading fashion accessories brand that is sold luxury department stores and more than 600 specialty boutiques worldwide.

Restaurant openings

▪ The owners of Ruchi Indian Cuisine have opened a second operation in Shannon Valley Shopping Center, the quick serve Hot Bakes Indian Cafe.

Hot Bakes, at 11144 Antioch Road in Overland Park, serves chat, pastries, cakes, wraps and panini, fresh fruit juice and cakes.

▪ New York-based Just Salad has opened a location at Kansas State University in Manhattan, on the first floor of the K-State Student Union, which is under a renovation that is scheduled to be completed in August 2017.

The fast casual salad brand serves such items as the seasonal A Very Just Salad Thanksgiving (with turkey, roasted green beans, baby spinach, roasted acorn squash, dried cranberries and almonds), along with standard menu items such as its Chicken Caesar (with Romaine, grilled chicken, shaved Parmesan and multigrain croutons) and build-your-own salads using a variety of ingredients.

It has 29 locations in New York, Chicago, Hong Kong and Dubai, but this is its first on a college campus.

▪ Twisted Fresh plans an early December opening at 8905 W. 135th St. in Overland Park.

Owner Alan Rust also another location in Overland Park, as well as locations in Shawnee and the Northland. The operations serve made-from-scratch, made-to-order sandwiches, tacos, wraps and burritos using fresh ingredients.

Zoomin Market update

The building housing Olathe’s former drive-thru grocery, Zoomin Market, is now for sale.

Zoomin Market opened in April 2014 at 12203 S. Strang Line Road, offering standard grocery items and national and local brands. Customers could shop online, then pull up in a drive-thru lane as employees put the orders in their vehicle.

In mid-August, it posted a notice on its Facebook page: “We are saying goodbye to the store that dared to change an entire industry. We’re not ready to throw in the towel though, so keep your eyes and ears open for big news in the near future.”

The owner couldn’t be reached for comment.

KW Commercial has the 14,000-square-foot building, on 1.6 acres, listed for sale for $1.45 million.
