Tennessee-based Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken is coming to Kansas City.
The iconic fried chicken chain currently has 10 locations. Today it announced plans to go national, opening nine more restaurants in 2015 in Kansas City, St. Louis, Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Fort Worth, Knoxville and Detroit.
Gus’s corporate officials couldn’t be reached for comment, but a manager said the company had looked at locations on the Kansas side of the state line but was now in negotiations to open in Kansas City, Mo.
According to the company’s website, Gus’s doesn’t serve fast food so customers should be prepared to wait or place pre-orders.
The first location opened in 1984, serving chicken with “crunchy, crispy skin and moist, tender meat” and “just enough cayenne pepper to let you know it’s there,” according to one reviewer. Other menu items include baked beans, fried green tomatoes, mashed potatoes and gravy, fried okra and slaw.
Current locations: Five in Tennessee, two in the Little Rock, Ark. area, one in Austin, Texas, and one in Southaven, Miss.
Mike Donegan, of Kansas City’s iconic chicken restaurant Stroud’s, said: “Come on in, the water’s fine. There’s enough business for everyone.”
