Two Single-Vehicle Crashes Under Investigation in Lyon County
Two separate single-vehicle crashes over the weekend remain under investigation by the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.
According to a sheriff's office press release, deputies, Emporia/Lyon County Fire Department and EMS personnel, along with Olpe first responders, were dispatched at approximately 5:33 p.m. Saturday to the 800 block of South Highway 99 for an injury crash involving a 2020 Toyota 4Runner.
Authorities said the SUV was traveling northbound when it veered into the east ditch, struck an embankment and became airborne for approximately 106 feet before overturning and rolling several times.
The driver, identified as 28-year-old Kylie Joy Stueve of Olpe, sustained minor injuries and was transported by EMS to Newman Regional Health for treatment.
In a separate incident early Sunday morning, Lyon County deputies and Emporia/Lyon County Fire/EMS were dispatched at approximately 2 a.m. to 1539 Road F for a report of an individual needing assistance.
Upon arrival, deputies determined a single-vehicle crash had occurred and, with assistance from the Kansas Highway Patrol, located a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado submerged in the Cottonwood River in the 1500 block of Road F.
Investigators said 20-year-old Charlie Strom of Emporia was traveling north on Road F when he failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway. The pickup continued through the west ditch, struck a section of concrete connected to a bridge and became airborne before landing in the river.
Strom was able to exit the vehicle and seek assistance. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was evaluated at the scene by EMS personnel. Citations are pending further investigation.
