DK County Commission approves digital billboard

Dickinson County Commissioners approved the placement of a 200-square-foot digital billboard on the east side of K-15, about one mile north of Elmo.

The project has been in development for several years through collaboration with the Dickinson County Historical Society, said Planning and Zoning Administrator Tim Hamilton.

It is expected to boost visibility for local attractions and events.

Hamilton told commissioners at their April 2 meeting that the billboard will promote a variety of community features and events, and draw attention to the county's historic carousel and other offerings tied to the historical society.

"We've been working with them now for a couple of years on this to finally get it done," Hamilton said.

"Both the Planning Commission and staff believe that this is going to be extremely economically beneficial for the county and bring more eyes to see what's available."

The Dickinson County Commission approved the request during its April 2 meeting following a recommendation from the planning commission.

As part of the approval, the applicant must obtain a permit from the Kansas Department of Transportation before moving forward. Once that documentation is submitted, the county will issue a final permit.

Commissioners raised no objections to the project, and the measure passed unanimously.

Hamilton said the digital sign will be designed with lighting positioned to avoid interference with nearby properties and drivers. Responsibility for maintenance, taxes, and any lease agreements will fall to the property owner or operator.

The billboard is expected to function similarly to others in the region, serving as a long-term promotional tool to highlight attractions and encourage visitation throughout Dickinson County.
