A man faces multiple felony charges related to a shooting Saturday in Northeast KC.

Abdisalaan H. Mohamud was charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm and resisting a lawful stop, according to a release from the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.

According to court records, police were called to the 1400 block of Independence Avenue around 12:30 p.m. after a report of a shooting. They found a victim close to Ninth and Woodland Avenue. According to the victim, a red vehicle had pulled up next to the victim’s vehicle, someone leaned out the window with a rifle and shot at the vehicle.

A witness driving through the area said they saw the assailant’s vehicle traveling erratically at Independence Avenue and Woodland Avenue. The witness, according to court documents, saw a man with a ski mask hanging from the driver’s-side window brandishing a rifle.

Shortly before the incident, at 11:30 a.m., officers were called to a separate incident. A woman reported seeing a man wearing a ski mask pass her vehicle around Benton Boulevard and St. John Avenue, according to court documents. He allegedly smiled at her and pointed what she said was a “machine gun” at her, then fled.

The victim found near Ninth and Woodland Avenue had gunshot wounds to the abdomen, according to court documents. Witnesses helped officers locate the assailant’s truck, but when a traffic stop was attempted, Mohamud allegedly fled.

A high-speed chase, with speeds of up to 100 mph, went for miles until Mohamud crashed his truck at Truman Road and Van Brunt Boulevard, police said. There were 1,008 .223 rounds of ammunition from inside the vehicle scattered on the roadway.

Mohamud is being held on $200,000 bond.
