A pedestrian who was hit by a car while walking across Kansas City’s Heart of America Bridge died Friday morning, police say.

Emergency crews responded to the bridge, which spans the Missouri River, just before 12:45 a.m. Thursday to find the victim suffering from life-threatening injuries. The pedestrian was taken to the hospital and died a day later, according to Jake Becchina, a spokesman with the Kansas City Police Department.

Kansas City officers discovered during their investigation that the pedestrian was walking north in the second lane of traffic when they were struck by a silver Toyota Highlander, also traveling north.

The driver and passenger of the Toyota were not injured and cooperated at the scene.

Police are continuing to investigate the accident, Becchina said.
