Airborne car hits tree and roof of home, killing driver just south of Johnson County
One person has died after a vehicle struck a home in Miami County, officials said. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is helping investigate.
Officers were called at about 4:38 p.m. Wednesday to a crash in the area of 223rd Street and 3rd Street in the town of Bucyrus, according to a news release from the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.
The 911 caller told police that a person was trapped inside the vehicle, authorities said. Deputies arriving to the scene found a 2018 Dodge Charger flipped on its passenger side in the backyard of a home.
The sheriff’s office said the driver of the vehicle was headed east on 223rd Street when they went over a set of railroad tracks and lost control. The vehicle went into the south ditch, then went airborne. They believe the driver may have been speeding.
“The vehicle crossed 3rd Street in the air, struck a tree, struck the roof of the residence and landed on its side trapping the driver,” the release read.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. The two people who were inside the home at the time were not injured.
The Overland Park Fire Department and Louisburg Fire Department also assisted.
