Police car engulfed in flames, more tear gas deployed at KC Plaza Saturday night

A Kansas City police car went up in flames Saturday night during protests on the Country Club Plaza, video shows.

The patrol car, fully aflame on a street on the Plaza, was the latest sign of a protest that turned dangerous on Saturday.

Another police car was vandalized with spray paint.

A fire truck was summoned to the scene and Kansas City police continued to deploy tear gas in an attempt to disperse crowds.

Officers with the Missouri Highway Patrol arrived at the scene. Earlier in the evening Gov. Mike Parson declared a state of emergency due to civil unrest.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas urged protesters to go home safely.

“I know folks are hurting, but please, no matter our pain or anger, let’s make sure we all get home safely,” Lucas said in a tweet. “I know we have a lot to fix and work on. Let’s do it together. I’m in. But, let’s not have more hurt tonight.”

Kansas City Police Cpt. David Jackson said the Missouri National Guard will arrive tomorrow.
