Winter weather advisory issued for KC metro
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the Kansas City area on Monday evening, and is encouraging drivers to take extra precautions on their Tuesday morning commutes due to the possibility of of icy roads.
“Some of the new model data coming in suggests the light freezing rain tomorrow AM could creep farther south, possibly into #KC,” the weather service wrote on Twitter. “This is NOT a bread and milk type situation! Just set those Tuesday AM alarms a little earlier in case your morning commute gets slick.”
Despite temperatures reaching a high of 68 degrees at the downtown airport this morning, a cold front coming in from the north has been steadily expanding toward Kansas City that threatens to turn the metro’s expected freezing rain into ice should streets become cold enough.
Temperatures in the area are hovering above freezing Monday night, so roads are currently fine, the weather service says. But a possible “one to two degree drop could prove a tipping point that could turn wet roads into icy ones.”
The freezing rain could continue well into Tuesday morning, the Service said in its most recent situation report. “Up to 0.2 accumulation of ice is possible.”
