KCK 1-year-old girl found after reported kidnapping

A 1-year-old who was allegedly kidnapped Friday afternoon in Kansas City, Kan. has been located and reported safe.

The child was taken back to her mother and grandmother by 6 p.m. Friday.

Kansas City, Kan. police had announced via Twitter that they were looking for Shamya Reed, 1, after receiving a report of a possible kidnapping near the area of North 61st Street and Farrow Avenue on Friday afternoon.

The child was allegedly taken from her mother at gunpoint at an apartment, police had said. Police received the call at around 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Shamya’s mother, Mauricha, later told reporters that a gun wasn’t pointed at her during the incident but said she saw a female with a gun outside the window of the apartment. Mauricha Reed said her 1-year-old was taken by the child’s father, identified by police as Ricardo Wheeler. Police had said Wheeler left with the child with an unidentified female. The mother said Wheeler allegedly threatened her before Shamya was taken.

More than an hour after police initially reported the alleged kidnapping on Twitter, the child’s grandmother reportedly told police that she got the child back from Wheeler and the unidentified female.

Police had said they were looking for a 1990s gray Oldsmobile Alero and a male, believed to be the child’s father, Wheeler. A police spokesman at the scene said police had made contact with Wheeler and were expected to meet him in Missouri to get the child back.

Police later sent a tweet that said Shamya was located and was with her grandmother.
