Fruit has hidden superpowers: Discover the amazing health benefits that may surprise you
Fruit, with an array of bright colors and sweet flavors, is definitely nature’s candy. But unlike traditional candy that causes cavities and sugar crashes, fruit has amazing benefits for your health. Some might even call it a health hero, with superpowers that act on everything from your sleep to your immune system.
We’ve compiled a list of fruit facts you might not have heard before, so next time you’re out shopping, you’ll see the produce section in a whole new light.
To start us off, the fruit experts at Stemilt Growers shared some lesser-known information about cherries and apricots.
Cherries: Natural pain relief and sleep aid
Eating cherries regularly can help reduce pain and inflammation associated with conditions like inflammatory arthritis. A single cup of cherries provides natural vitamin C and antioxidants while being fat-, cholesterol-, and sodium-free, all under 90 calories. Plus, cherry juice has a high melatonin content and has been shown to help improve sleep quality.
Apricots: Extra immunity boost
Apricots are rich in flavonoids, a type of antioxidant that can protect against diabetes and heart disease. Eating apricots can give your body a boost of essential vitamins and minerals, supporting your immune system and overall health.
Next, Avery Zenker, a registered dietician, highlighted the assets of kiwis and purple fruits.
Kiwis: Vitamin C heavy-hitter
Kiwis contain an enzyme called actinidin which can support regular bowel movements, reduce constipation and improve overall digestion, especially for high-protein foods. Plus, just 100 grams or about 2 kiwis, provides 100% (yes, 100%!) of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C, much more than oranges.
Purple fruits: Maximize antioxidant protection
Purple-colored fruits like blackberries, blueberries, plums and pomegranates owe their vibrant hue to a phytochemical called anthocyanin. This compound has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Antioxidants are very important for protecting your cells against stress and damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals.
Addie Claire Jones, who is also a registered dietitian, shared the two fruits highest in fiber.
Raspberries: A low-sugar treat
Raspberries are one of the highest fiber fruits, packing 8 grams per cup. Using frozen raspberries in smoothies is a great way to boost fiber and antioxidants while saving money and preventing spoilage. This vibrant berry is also one of the fruits lowest in sugar.
Passion fruit: The fiber favorite
Passion fruit takes the No. 1 spot when it comes to fiber, boasting an impressive 25 grams per cup. This almost meets your total daily needs for fiber, which is crucial for gut health, heart health, weight management and cancer prevention.
Watermelon: Top-notch hydration
The aptly-named watermelon is over 90% water, making it an excellent choice for staying hydrated, especially during hot weather. It also contains vitamins A, B6, and C, as well as lycopene, an important antioxidant.
Dates: Natural energy boost
Dates are a fantastic energy booster due to their high carbohydrate content, particularly natural sugars like glucose, fructose, and sucrose as well as magnesium and potassium. There is even research that shows eating dates at the end of pregnancy can help the body prepare for labor and a smooth delivery, due to this fruit’s ability to trigger the release of the hormone oxytocin.
Pineapples: Reduce inflammation
Pineapples contain bromelain, an enzyme that helps reduce inflammation and improve digestion. Bromelain is especially effective in breaking down proteins, making pineapple a great addition to a high-protein diet. Pineapples are also rich in vitamin C, supporting immune health and skin vitality.
Next time you reach for a snack, consider the hidden superpowers of fruits and enjoy their delicious, wellness-enhancing qualities.
