Why doesn’t my lemon grass have flowers this year?

QUESTION:

Last year I planted lemon grass for the first time. Then, in late fall, it suddenly produced bright red flowers. I have lemon grass again this year; it is very lush, taller and thicker grass, but no red flowers. What could be the likely reason? Thanks - Margaret

ANSWER:

Lemongrass does flower in the tropics, but rarely so in our climate, so you were lucky last year. The plant needs a long growing season to flower outside, and we just do not have that here in the KC area. Carole-Johnson County Extension Master Gardener
