Merchants Pub & Plate opens tomorrow in downtown Lawrence
a duo of local restaurateurs announced plans
to convert the former bank building at 746 Massachusetts St. to a gastropub.
The gastropub,
, opens at 11 a.m. tomorrow with 30 beers on tap and a menu full of local, seasonal food that pairs well with brews. Think sandwiches made with beer-battered fish or homemade pimento cheese, fried jumbo lump crab cakes on a bed of sweet corn puree, house-baked pretzel baguettes with mustard-ale whipped butter, and chorizo deviled eggs.
The extensive craft beer menu features West Coast beers (Stone, Green Flash) alongside local selections from breweries in Lawrence (Free State, 23rd Street), Manhattan, Kan. (Little Apple), Weston, Mo. (Weston Brewing Company) and, of course, Kansas City (Boulevard).
If you’re more into yard beer, Merchants also has
on tap.
Lawrence chef TK Peterson and KC native Philip Wilson are the restaurateurs behind Merchants, which gets its name from the building’s original tenant, Merchants National Bank. The team also restored the historic space — arguably one of the most beautiful in Lawrence, with its huge windows and soaring ceilings strung with lots of glowing pendant lamps.

Merchants isn’t the only new business that local beer lovers should be excited about.
, a new microbrewery at 110 East 18th Ave. in North Kansas City, celebrates its grand opening next Friday, September 27.
The brewery is the brainchild of local homebrewer Bryce Schaffter, who is teaming up with longtime
brewmaster Bryan “Bucky” Buckingham.
