Small town cafe and bakery coming to Johnson County, replacing burger spot
A Baldwin City staple will soon open its second location in Johnson County.
Homestead Kitchen + Bakery — a cafe that opened outside the metro in 2016 — is making its way to the Lenexa Public Market.
Serving biscuits and gravy, strawberry swirl muffins, burgers, and other favorites, Homestead is taking over the former Cosmo Burger stall.
Cosmo Burger left the food hall at 8750 Penrose Lane to open its forthcoming standalone spot in the Crossroads at 1813 Locust St.
Homestead owners Kelly and Lori Gardner plan to keep the spot open seven days a week and offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. The stall is slated to open in early July.
“We’re a delicious, casual concept that brings balance to the table. Whether you want a healthy salad and protein balls, or you have a hankering for a burger, fries, and ice cream, we have something for every mood,” Lori said in a media statement. “We’ve been in business for close to nine years and we’ve worked very hard to build a concept that our customers enjoy. We look forward to sharing that with our friends in Lenexa!”
The concept started not long after Lori and Kelly adopted four children. Lori began baking and sharing recipes with friends, at farmers markets and her church coffee shop.
Eventually, the couple opened a spot in downtown Baldwin City at 719 Eighth St.
“We’ve loved getting to know our community and serving up a fresh, delicious variety of pastries, meals and sweet treats—always made with care, just like themearly days,” Lori said.
The Lenexa Public Market opened in 2017 in the Lenexa City Center area and offers a variety of cuisines: Mr. D’s Coffee, Saap Saap Noodles, African Dream Kitchen and more.
Mediterranean eatery KC Döner also recently opened its spot in the market, serving hummus, tabouli, and German-style doners.
